Chair, Special Concerns and Social Services
The blood donation activity signals for a sustainable partnership and collaboration between Philippine KOICA Fellows Association (PhilKOFA) and DOH-Philippine Blood Center (DOH-PBC) for mutual advantage. Through such collaboration, aside from responding to the call of the government for assistance to help augment the need for blood in the country, PhilKOFAns can also benefit from this project during health emergencies. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Philkofa and the DOH-Philippine Blood Center ceremonial signing activity was conducted last June 14, 2022 during the World Blood Donor Day at the Philippine Blood Center, Quezon City, to seal the partnership between the agencies as “Kabalikat Partner Agency.” The MoA signing was represented by Ms. Michelle Esteban, Chair for Social Services and Special Concerns for Philkofa and Dr. Dennis Dayao L. Ordoña, Head of the Philippine Blood Center.
The first project for 2022 is dubbed as “PhilKOFA, Feel Ko Blood Donation Drive”. It was conducted last 20 February 2022, Brgy. Malate, Manila. This is in support to the celebration of the Philippine Heart Month wherein the PhilKOFA, in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), DOH-Philippine Blood Center and the Rotary Club of Manila Robinson. A total of 54 blood donors participated in the said drive, 48 were successfully bled. Donors came from various agencies and organizations such as, Philippine Air Force (PAF), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), DOST-PAGASA, Rotary Club of Manila Robinson and Brgy. Malate. Walk-in public regardless of their gender and status were welcomed and participated in the said event. Successful donors received giveaways from the DOH as well as from KOICA. Strict health protocols were followed during the event to ensure public safety.
It was said that for every bag of blood, it can save 3 lives.
The second blood donation drive, after the MoA signing was conducted on October 31, 2022, with a Halloween theme. The blood donation activity was extended until November 2022 due to severe tropical storm “Paeng” for which the Metro Manila experienced Signal No. 3. The medical mission however, pushed through despite the inclement weather. We provided support to the front liners present including on site medical personnel, security guards, and utility personnel who are often disregarded during the storm. Together with our partner agency through donation of personal first aid kits, medical supplies, alcohol, face mask, weighing scale, hygiene kits and snacks the medical mission was a success. The medical equipment will be able to aid the thousands of blood donors of PBC. About 50 medical kits were distributed to the medical fronliners and blood donors.
This activity was able to fulfill the following SDG goals:SDG Goal #3 – Good Health and Well-Being, SDG Goal #5 – Gender Equality, SDG Goal # 10 – Reduced inequality, and SDG Goal # 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
