In view of the needs of the schools in order to sustain more in-depth ICT literacy programs, the Philippine KOICA Fellows Association, Inc. (PhilKOFA) with the help of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Philippines, implemented the Project Edukalidad: Supporting Back-to-School Program Under the New Normal on November 7, 2022, at Jiabong National High School, Jiabong Samar, and Hinabangan National High School, Hinabangan Samar. This project seeks to support the government’s effort to reinforce the quality of education in the country after the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic through the provision of the needed school facilities.
Samar is the third largest island in the Philippines, it is considered the “ring of fire” in the Pacific and is always visited by strong typhoons like Super Typhoon Yolanda. Samar is one of the poorest islands in the country because of recurring natural catastrophes. Considering the geographical location makes it the most vulnerable region as considered the island of a thousand typhoons. The Jiabong National High School population is around 1, 417 students, and the Hinabangan National High School’s population of approximately 1,785 students. Both schools are located in a rural area and the majority of the students are living below the poverty line.
The turnover ceremony was attended by the school principals, teachers, and students; the president of the Parents and Teachers Association; the president of the Supreme Student Government; barangay officials; and a representative of the LGU of Hinabangan, Samar. PhilKOFA was represented by its Public Relations Officer during the said ceremony, and it was in partnership with Samar State University.
The school, through its principal, expressed heartfelt gratitude to PhilKOFA for the assistance extended to the school. The principal was really thankful for the help extended, as they said they usually ask for donations for the equipment, and now they have given such blessings without asking for them. The ICT equipment will be a great help in the teaching and learning process and improve student academic performance in a classroom setting. The president of the PTA, the president of the SSG, and representatives from barangay officials and LGUs also expressed their sincere thanks to PhilKOFA and KOICA. They were grateful to be one of the recipients of this Edukalidad project, and they hope it will continue to support more schools that need such ICT equipment to support and implement its program. Indeed, PhilKOFA is making a difference.
