Early Warning and Monitoring System for Disaster Mitigation in the Phil Phases I and II

(2007-2008/2010-2012 / US$4 million) With project sites in the Provinces of Aurora, Iloilo and Lanao, the project intends to minimize the loss of lives and damages to properties due natural hazards. In partnership with PAGASA, KOICA established proper weather and flood forecasting model for early warning and monitoring system.  The $ 1 million project installed modern weather monitoring and water level gauging equipment to help agricultural workers and the local community become better prepared against weather-related hazards. As an immediate response to the devastation brought by Typhoon Ondoy, KOICA initiated a $3 million Phase 2 project that will establish a network of state of the art monitoring facilities along the Pasig-Marikina River in Metro Manila.

NGO Support KOICA supports Korean NGOs engaged in overseas development activities to enhance aid delivery and promote community engagement on development issues. The NGO Support program complements other Korean Government-led cooperation programs through its support to local grass-roots development efforts. KOICA provided assistance to Korean NGOs in the Philippines with the latter’s foreign aid activities such as the Join Together Society’s relief for marginalized people and education for children in Mindanao; Habitat for Humanity’s housing projects built under the “Korea-Philippines Friendship House” in its various affiliates in Dumaguete, Bohol, General Santos, Quezon Province, etc.; and Good People International’s Tuberculosis Eradication Program in the Philippines, among others.

KOICA to jumpstart wood pellet production in CARAGA Region

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) signed an agreement for the construction of a wood pellet plant in Caraga region, northern Mindanao. Wood pellet, an environment-friendly fuel source used for household heating in several temperate countries, will be manufactured using sawdust and other wood waste as raw materials.
