KOICA, Yonsei University and Lung Center of the Philippines Embarks on Collaboration Project

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), together with the Lung Center and Yonsei University in Korea, held an Inception Ceremony on January 11, 2013 for its project aimed at enhancing training and research capacity on tuberculosis. The project, entitled “Capacity Building for Laboratory Diagnosis and Control Program of Tuberculosis” shall focus on strengthening the capability of Lung Center and TB Control health workers on clinical research, laboratory diagnosis, and maintenance and operation of the Biological Safety Laboratory Level 3 (BSL3) at the National Center for Pulmonary Research (NCPR) in Lung Center.

PhilKOFA Convenes 11th General Membership Meeting

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Philippine KOICA Fellows Association (PhilKOFA) Inc. held its 11th General Membership Meeting (GMM) at Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati City last December 8, 2012.  Almost ninety members and guests united in this season of Christmas to bolster camaraderie, elect the 2013 officers of the Board of Trustees, and acknowledge awardees of the recently conducted First Asian Regional Conference of the KOICA Clubs.

Korea turns over Bohol Rice Processing Complex to PHL

The Republic of Korea reaffirmed its commitment in helping the Philippines achieve rice self-sufficiency in 2013 during the December 10 inauguration ceremony of the US$5 M Rice Processing Complex (RPC) in Pilar, Bohol. The ceremony was attended by Korean Ambassador LEE Hyuk, DA Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat, KOICA Philippine Office Resident Representative KIM Jinoh, Governor Edgar Chatto and Congressman Arthur Yap. The RPC is a “one-stop service center” equipped with state-of-the-art, post-harvest facilities and technologies that will improve the efficiency of rice production, milling, drying and storage thereby reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing rice quality. The complex, with a total area of 10,000 square meters, has a drying capacity of 3,600 metric tons per year, a milling capacity of 3 MT or an equivalent of 60 cavans per hour, a milling recovery of 65% and a storage capacity of 22,000 bags.

KOV Batch 50 Turnover Ceremony

Last November 27, KOICA, PNVSCA, and 8 local partner organizations held a Co-Management Meeting and Turnover Ceremony of KOV Batch 50.  After the eight-week In-country training new KOVs will be dispatched in various public schools and college institutions that will serve as their homes and training grounds for the next two years. They will be devoting their time, knowledge, and skills in different fields of specialization such as Computer, Mathematics, Special Education, Veterinary Medicine, and Marine Culture.

KOV – JOCV holds Friendly Soccer Match

KOICA once again held a soccer match between Korea Overseas Volunteers (KOV) and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) on November 17 at UP Diliman soccer field. This was participated by more than 80 KOVs and JOCVs together with key officials and staffs from KOICA, JICA, and PNVSCA. This activity was designed to promote friendly cooperation and foster camaraderie between the KOVs and JOCVs.

Korea donates relief goods for flood victims

His Excellency Hyuk LEE, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of the Philippines, turned over US$200,000 worth of relief goods to Secretary Dinky Soliman of the DSWD on 18 October 2012.  The relief goods, coursed through KOICA, are composed of 1,500 sets of hygiene kits and 4,000 pieces of blankets. The goods arrived in Manila on September 6 and have been delivered to Regions III and IV-A for distribution to families affected by the floods caused by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

Korea to help DOTC develop a Motor Vehicle Inspection System

The Korean Government’s Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will provide a US$ 1 million grant to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) for the establishment of a National Integrated Vehicle Inspection and Management System in the Philippines.  KOICA Resident Representative KIM Jinoh and DOTC Assistant Secretary Jaime Raphael Feliciano signed the project agreement on October 12, 2012 at the DOTC.
